Spousal Open Work Permit

A spousal Open Work Permit allows for family unification and to engage with local community and earn income. It also allows your children to study in Canada in preschool, elementary, middle or higher secondary school levels. If you want to sponsor your spouse, they can apply for an open work permit. It will take us about 4-5 months to process the Open Work Permit application.

Remember that your spouse must:

  • Maintain legal status as a visitor, student or worker in Canada;
  • Wait for their work permit application to be approved before starting to work;
  • Provide all supporting documents;
  • Proof of payment.

Spouses who are on Open Work Permit and want to apply for spousal Open Work Permit you must meet the following eligibility:

  • Your principal work permit validity should be a minimum of six months

Note: If the validity is less than six months, the application for a spousal Open Work Permit is refused by IRCC.

  • Job requirement must match the minimum skill level (If the principal work permit is issued under the NOC codes of   C or D then application for spousal Open Work Permit is not successful).
